On December 23rd, Chinese lantern festival made its debut in Central America and opened grandly in Panama City, Panama. The lantern exhibition was co-organized by the Chinese Embassy in Panama and the Office of the First Lady of Panama, and hosted by the Huaxian Hometown Association of Panama (Huadu). As one of the "Happy Chinese New Year" celebrations, distinguished guests including Li Wuji, Charge d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Panama, Cohen, the First Lady of Panama, other ministers and representatives of diplomatic missions from many countries in Panama attended and witnessed this cultural event.
Li Wuji said at the opening ceremony that Chinese lanterns have a long history and symbolize the Chinese nation's good wishes for a happy family and good luck. He hopes that Chinese lanterns will add more festive atmosphere to the Panamanian people's New Year celebrations. In her speech, Maricel Cohen de Mulino, the First Lady of Panama, said that the Chinese lanterns lighting up the night sky symbolize hope, friendship and unity, and also imply that despite the different cultures of Panama and China, the people of the two countries are as close as brothers.
Nine groups of exquisite lantern works, including Chinese dragons, pandas, and palace lanterns, exclusively produced and provided by Haitian Culture, were exhibited in Parque Omar.
The "Happy Chinese New Year" auspicious Snake lantern authorized to be produced by Haitian Culture became the star of the lantern exhibition and were deeply loved by the audiences.
Panama City citizen Tejera came to enjoy the lanterns with his family. When he saw the park decorated with Chinese lanterns, he couldn't help but exclaimed, "Being able to see such beautiful Chinese lanterns on Christmas Eve just shows the diversity of Panamanian culture."
The mainstream media in Panama widely reported on this event, spreading the charm of Chinese lanterns to all parts of the country.
The lantern festival is free to be public, with an exhibition area of more than 10,000 square meters. Many tourists stopped to watch and praised it. This is the first time that Chinese lanterns have bloomed in Central America, which not only promoted cultural exchanges between China and Panama, but also brought joy and blessings to the Panamanian people, adding a new touch to the cultural diversity of Central America and the friendly relations between the two countries.
